# Workbooks

A [workbook](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#workbook "Where you analyze time-series data from assets and runs, in tabs and panels, after a test or live.") is where you plot and review your data in the Nominal app. It shows an [asset](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#asset "A physical or simulated device or system you track in Nominal, such as a vehicle, a component, a unit under test, or a test stand.")’s or [run](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#run "A named, time-bounded period of interest on one or more assets, such as a test, a flight, or a race session.")’s [channels](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#channel "A named signal: a series of measurements or computed values, such as voltage, pressure, or system state.") in tabs and [panels](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#panel "A block in a workbook where you plot, compare, or annotate time-series data, such as a chart, scatter plot, histogram, or map."), where you mark [events](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#event "A point or span in time that marks something meaningful, such as the start of a burn, a failure, or a rule violation.") and compare runs. See [🔒︎Workbooks overview](https://docs.nominal.io/core/documentation/platform/workbooks/overview).

A workbook opens on a run or an asset, and [🔒︎its type](https://docs.nominal.io/core/documentation/platform/workbooks/overview#workbook-types) sets the time range it shows. A [🔒︎comparison workbook](https://docs.nominal.io/core/documentation/platform/workbooks/comparison-workbooks) compares summary numbers, such as each run’s peak value, across many runs. To open the same analysis on each new run or asset, save a workbook as a [template](https://dev.nominal.io/quickstart/quick/quick-template.md).

## Live workbooks

While data streams into an asset or run, a workbook on it can show the data live. Click **GO LIVE** in the workbook’s bottom bar. The workbook then updates as new points arrive, over a recent time window you choose. See [🔒︎Livestreaming data](https://docs.nominal.io/core/documentation/platform/workbooks/live-viewing-streaming-data), and for an example, [Live monitoring during a test](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/data-model/paradigms/stories/on-console.md).

## Checklists

A [checklist](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#checklist "A versioned set of checks that you execute on runs or assets to evaluate test data during or after a test.") is a set of [checks](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#check "A rule that evaluates time-series data against a condition, such as a threshold or a state change, and creates an event wherever the condition is met."), such as a value limit, that you execute on a run or asset after a test or while data streams in. Each check creates an [event](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#event "A point or span in time that marks something meaningful, such as the start of a burn, a failure, or a rule violation.") wherever its condition is met, and you review those events in a workbook. See [🔒︎Checks and checklists](https://docs.nominal.io/core/documentation/platform/flag-events/overview#checklists), and for a walkthrough, [Automated pass/fail checks](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/data-model/paradigms/stories/automated-checks.md).
