# Creating asset metadata

Create an [asset](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/data-model.md#data-model-asset) for the system you’re testing, and describe it with [properties](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#property "A key-value pair, of type Text or Number, that describes an asset, run, or data source, such as an identifier, context, or a quantity.") (key-value pairs) and [labels](https://dev.nominal.io/platform/reference/glossary.md#label "A short piece of text for grouping, searching, and filtering assets, runs, data sources, and events, such as prototype or night-flight.") (short text for grouping and search).

## In the Nominal app

1. In the sidebar, click **Assets**, then **NEW ASSET**.
2. Enter a title, such as `UUT1`.
3. Under **Labels**, pick or create a label, such as `prototype`.
4. Click **Add property**, create a property such as `serial_number`, and enter its value, such as `SN-001`.
5. Click **CREATE ASSET**.
